We are screwed!
Well, at least for a while. Our beloved database server after 18 months alone, without a domain controller, finally refused to connect to the network. So here we are, moving things around like a madman, trying to get them off the poor old Celeron-driven NT 4 running MS-SQL server that has held our messages and our log files lo these last many years. (Closing in on ten!)
We have a marvellously complex new set-up: a Windows 2K Server running VMware (Highly recommended stuff!) and so far two virtual machines (VMs to the acronym lovers). One of the VMs is another Windows 2K Server with SQL Server 7.0 (a few generations old, but it's pretty solid and we can't afford an upgrade). The other VM, now logging our web activities for the WK3 Server with IIS, is running Ubuntu (a form of Linux) and MySQL Server.
Talk about issues!! Ubuntu Linux is pretty well where NT 4 was when first released. Lots of good stuff, the initial installs go well, but when one starts using some of the applications (like MySQL) there's a need to keep dropping back into what they call "Terminal" and we in the MS world call "Command Prompt". And a need to understand where files are hidden and how the protection scheme works. Or doesn't, as the case may be.
Anyhow, we have our commercial sites to get perfected first, then we'll come back for the fun stuff and get the database behind these comments all up and running. (MySQL seems to have pretty solid migration tools, but when the base problem is the original database machine won't network, one is still SOL.)
